Kundalini Yoga Classes in the Greater Phoenix Area
Kundalini Yoga is one of the more ancient forms of Yoga that was introduced here in the United States in 1969 when Sikh Yogi Bhajan founded 3HO (or the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization). In fact one of the oldest Kundalini Yoga Centers in the United States is right here in Phoenix which was founded in 1970.
Simply stated Kundalini is a term that refers to the untapped energy at the base of your spine, and the intention of Kundalini Yoga is to draw that energy up through your body to awaken each of your seven chakras.
Once this begins to happen and that energy reaches your Crown Chakra, you then are able to reach full enlightenment.
In order to accomplish this Kundalini Yoga places special focus on both your breathing (pranayama) and movement. As you continue to focus on your breath each asana (yoga pose) is done with a specific pranayama breathing technique that enhances the effect of the poses.
Of course this is done with the intention of freeing the energy from the base of your spine so that it can begin to move upwards.
As you are continuing to read this you are probably wondering what to expect from a Kundalini Yoga class so let me tell you.
A Kundalini Yoga class typically begins with a short chant and then a warm-up session that will help stretch your spine and improve your flexibility. After the warm up you will be required to do a sequence of poses that focus on specific areas of your body which is often referred to as kriva. Finally, the class ends with a meditation which is often accompanied by the playing of a gong as well as a closing song.
And as you are continuing to absorb this information into your brain you might be wondering if Kundalini yoga is for you?
While, I always will tell you that experiencing a yoga studio or type of yoga for yourself is the best way to determine if it is right for you I will say this about Kundalini Yoga.
When it comes to types of yoga, Kundalini yoga is of a more spiritual aspects that moves you beyond the body’s physical performance and instead puts more attention on these aspects of Yoga:
-
Breathing (Pranyama)
-
Chanting
-
Meditation
-
Mudras
Yet, even though Kundalini Yoga is very spiritual in nature it can be a very physically challenging yoga class.
Now that you’ve mentally got a feel for what Kundalini Yoga is here is a list of Yoga Studios that are currently offering Kundalini Yoga classes in the greater Phoenix Area.
