One of the more challenging aspects of finding an Ashtanga Yoga class has to do with the fact that there is "Ashtanga Yoga" which refers to the eight-fold path to Self-Realization that was written in the Yoga Sutras that was written by Sage Patanjali.
And then there is the yoga practice that is more fitness based that is also known as Ashtanga Yoga or Mysore Ashtanga Yoga.
Seeing as this is a site dedicated to helping you Heal You First with the practices of Yoga and Meditation but more importantly finding yoga studios and meditation centers here in the Greater Phoenix area where you can actually practice. Mysore Ashtanga Yoga or Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a rather rigorous system of yoga postures developed by K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.
These yoga postures where designed to build strength, flexibility and stamina.
The practice of Ashtanga Yoga consists of a set series of poses that are always performed in the same order. What’s more yoga students continue to move from one yoga posture to the next in a continual flow that links movement to your breath (aka vinyasa).
As you can imagine Ashtanga yoga is a very physically demanding yoga practice. Indeed there are six levels of practices with each level being more advanced in its physical components than the previous.
Traditionally once you reach a level of proficiency in one series you then graduate to the next level so that you can then continue to practice and move towards the next level.
